Latest: Davon Sears Visits Tennessee, What It Means Going Forward
The transfer portal has been kind to Tennessee since head coach Josh Heupel arrived. The Volunteers landed several impact players that altered the trajectory of their 2022 season and powered them to new heights.
Heupel will attempt to do that again this off-season. They are set to lose multiple impact players to the professional ranks, meaning Tennessee must reload through the recruiting trail and transfer portal.
One early target is defensive lineman Davon Sears, a Texas State 2021 signee. In his redshirt freshman season, Sears tallied fifteen tackles and one sack, enough production to land him on the radar of several P5s.
Sears is down to Tennessee, Penn State, and Oklahoma. He had already visited Oklahoma earlier in the month and, on Thursday, was in Knoxville for a visit to Rocky Top.
The Volunteers need an impact front-seven player, as several of their own may be gone. Defensive lineman Byron Young has all but declared for the NFL Draft, and fans await the decision of several others.
Sears could come in right away and fill some snaps they need. The transfer portal is a luxury for brands like Tennessee, and they seem to be capitalizing on that.
