Phillip Fulmer retiring as Tennessee AD

Former coach Jeremy Pruitt isn’t the only one done in Knoxville today.

Phillip Fulmer has once again moved on from his position with the University of Tennessee.

Earlier Monday, a tweet from Pete Thamel of Yahoo! Sports suggested that Fulmer’s pick for head coach, Jeremy Pruitt, was out as head coach after three seasons.

But Thamel also hinted that Fulmer, the Vols’ athletic director, could be done, and now, that hint has proven true.

Fulmer, of course, replaced John Currie as Tennessee’s athletic director in 2017, bringing stability to a coaching search that had gone off the rails.

The last time Fulmer was done in Knoxville? 2008, after a 5-7 season and a 17-year tenure as head coach, with one national title in 1998.

This time, the move comes after an internal investigation into Tennessee’s program, as improper benefits were cited as the reasoning for the look inside Anderson Training Center.

A report from A to Z Sports, however, states that Fulmer’s resignation is unrelated to the investigation.

VR2 on SI has learned that Fulmer will remain in the role until Tennessee finds its next athletic director.

VR2 on SI will continue to provide updates for this developing story.
