Mike Matthews Earns Polynesian Bowl Honors
Parkview High School wide receiver Mike Matthews has had a busy past few weeks. He wrapped up a standout season on the gridiron, signed his national letter of intent with the Tennessee Volunteers, performed well during the Under Armour All-American Game festivities, stopped in Miami for the Vols' win over Iowa, and now has won the Offensive MVP of the Polynesian Bowl.
Matthews caught two passes for 44 yards, including a touchdown that sent social media into a frenzy. This is the second consecutive season that a Tennessee signee has won Offensive MVP of the Polynesian Bowl; 2023 quarterback signee Nico Iamaleava accounted for 249 yards and a touchdown during last year's game.
Tennessee sent five signees to the Polynesian Bowl this season: Matthews, five-star edge rusher Jordan Ross, four-star quarterback Jake Merklinger, four-star offensive tackle Bennett Warren, and four-star inside linebacker Edwin Spillman. They spent the week in Honolulu, Hawaii, making many plays on the gridiron and getting many people excited about the 2024 signing class. On paper, it's one of Tennessee's best classes in recent memory, highlighted by Matthews's explosive talent.
