What To Look For In Saturday's Orange And White Game
Josh Heupel and his squad have been relentlessly working for the past few weeks. With Spring Ball starting a couple of weeks ago, the Tennessee Volunteers have been practicing, as well as scrimmaging multiple times leading up to the Spring's marquee event, Saturday's Orange and White scrimmage at Neyland Stadium. As we approach, let's take a look at some of the key areas that Vols nation will have an eye towards.
Quarterback
The most obvious area of intrigue for Tennessee fans may be the quarterback room. While we are not quite ready to proclaim a Quarterback competition, it will be interesting to watch a pair of big names sling it in Nico Iamaleava and presumed starter Joe Milton III. Many in the building have raved about the relationship the pair has, including Milton's mentoring ability, something he may have learned from Hendon Hooker. This will be the first time Vols fans can watch Nico live in action while Milton builds off of his late-season success.
Secondary Play
The Vols least amount of production last season came from the defensive backs. A pass defense that consistently got exposed, especially with allowing 63 points at South Carolina, needed some serious work. With BYU transfer Gabe Jeudy-Lally coming into the mix, there will hopefully be an improvement. In the first Spring scrimmage, it was said that the defense did, in fact, outplay the offense. On Saturday, eyes will be on the secondary in front of their first crowd of 2023.
Offensive Line
With multiple big offensive line transfers in the mix, it will be interesting to see who all comes out with the first unit. Both Andrej Karic, from Texas, and John Campbell Jr., from Miami, are projected starters on the line alongside Cooper Mays, Javontez Spraggins, and Gerald Mincey. With the offensive line struggling at times in the earlier scrimmages, it will be interesting to see how they handle the front seven looks they get on Saturday.
