Oddsmakers Release Tennessee's Chances To Win SEC Crown
In Tennessee's quest to reach the mountaintop of college football, winning the SEC Championship is high on its checklist. The Vols haven't been atop the SEC since 1998, a game that saw wide receiver Peerless Price win MVP honors. Pop star Céline Dion had two No. 1 singles that year, and The Titanic grossed over $600 million in box office sales.
Needless to say, it's been a long time since the Vols won an SEC title. According to oddsmakers at BetOnline.com, Tennessee has its best shot at bringing home the trophy in quite a long time. The betting site released its SEC odds for the 2023 season, with Tennessee (+1400) having the fourth-best odds of any squad. Georgia, Alabama, and LSU came in front of the Vols, while the Texas A&M Aggies were tied with them. There is a substantial gap between the fourth and fifth-best odds, signifying that there's a clear top group in the SEC.
The offense will always be humming under head coach Josh Heupel, who has a new quarterback manning the show this year, Joe Milton III. Their performances in big games will determine how the Vols shake out compared to the rest of the conference - they had a dominant performance against Alabama in 2022, leading to a massive upset that rerouted the program, while they only scored 13 points against Georgia in an illuminating loss. The defense will also be a differentiator; Tennessee had one of the worst pass defenses in college football a year ago, and they must clean it up to succeed in postseason play.
