Vols Legend Jason Witten Lands Head Coaching Job
"A coach once told me, 'The legacy of heroes is the memory of a great name and the inheritance of a great example,'" Witten told ESPN's Todd Archer on Wednesday. "As I hang it up, I walk away knowing that for 17 seasons I gave it my absolute all. I am proud of my accomplishments as a football player on the field and the example I tried to set off of it. Football is a great game that has taught me many valuable lessons, and I look forward to passing on that knowledge to the next generation."
Witten retires as one of the best tight ends to ever play the game, but this retirement will look different than his last.
Witten headed to the broadcast booth following his brief retirement in 2018, but this time, he will take on a new challenge as a head coach at Liberty Christian School in Argyle (Texas).
The school announced the news earlier today. "Liberty Christian School is excited to announce our new Head Football Coach Jason Witten. Jason, former Dallas Cowboy tight end and long-time Liberty parent will be joining the Liberty Christian coaching staff as Head Football Coach. It’s a great day to be a Warrior," the school wrote over social media.
Witten takes over a team that went 2-7 this past season as he transitions to a different phase of football.
Witten is a sure bet to headed to the Hall of Fame in a few years, as he made 11 Pro Bowls, while hauling in 1,228 receptions for 13,046 yards and 74 touchdowns.
