The Final Prediction: Tennessee vs. Purdue
The Tennessee Volunteers face the Purdue Boilermakers on Sunday, attempting to reach their first Final 4 in program history. Volunteer Country has made its final prediction.
Tennessee fans have been patiently awaiting an Elite 8 trip. The last time it happened was during the 2010 season; much has changed since then, but one thing has not - the Vols are still without a Final Four appearance. However, they could change that this afternoon with a strong performance against the Purdue Boilermakers.
Guard Dalton Knecht was a huge saving grace in the Sweet 16, stymying several Creighton runs to seal Tennessee's win. He's been brilliant from the beginning of the season and has commanded the national media's attention. This season, Purdue forward Zach Edey has had a similar story, dominating his conference competition and leading the Boilermakers to their current juncture.
While many eyes will be on those two stars, and for good, reason, I see this game being decided on the defensive side of the court by role players. Tennessee survived Creighton's run because of how well they communicated and executed on the defensive end of the court. They did a good job shutting down cutting lanes and forcing the Bluejays into three-point shots. The Boilermakers have built a strong roster around Edey that can handle the slack from behind the arc if the Vols play physical on the interior; however, that's the route the Vols likely take, as Edey can take over a game.
Several members of Tennessee's team pointed out that both squads are better, but different, then they were when the two sides initially faced off this season. It's difficult to beat the same team twice in a season; if anyone can do it, it's Purdue. However, I see this one going in favor of the Vols because of the surronding pieces they've developed on defense.
Volunteer Country Prediction: Tennessee, 75-71
