What Does Jordan Gainey's Role Look Like?
There's absolutely no denying that Tennessee had a big week. Between getting back Santiago Vescovi and adding a handful of transfers, the Vols are not only loading up but addressing issues. Jordan Gainey wasn't the most eye-popping name Tennessee could've gotten or just added in general. With the connection, though, the addition made all the sense in the world.
The reality of the next season for Gainey remains unclear. Tennessee, including the incoming freshman Josiah-Jordan James, is way over the scholarship limit. Teams are only allowed 13 scholarship players. Tennessee currently has 17. This roster will not look the same come a couple of months from now.
What we cannot deny about Jordan Gainey is that his skillset is necessary. Gainey only shot around 33% from three last season, but he shot around 42% the season before. As a pure spot-up shooter, that number at Tennessee should be closer to 42% again.
The key for Gainey is just understanding the role he's going to be in. Tennessee has a lot of young and exciting players at the guard position. Most would think Gainey gets the nod for playing time over a guy like Cameron Carr. This roster will be jam-packed, though, and there's no doubt that Gainey will have to earn his playing time.
Finally, it'll be interesting to see how Tennessee sorts out this roster and who Gainey will compete against. Will they use NIL to cover a player's scholarship? Is there going to be a de-commitment? Who is transferring? There are still a lot of questions to be answered, but there is no doubt that Gainey is a positive addition.
