Tennessee Clinches SEC Regular Season Title

The Tennessee Volunteers clinched the regular season SEC title with their win over the South Carolina Gamecocks.

The Tennessee Volunteers have shared the No. 1 spot in the SEC over the last week. Saturday's win over the Alabama Crimson Tide launched them into sole possession of that top spot with two regular season games remaining. While they felt comfortable ahead of the SEC Tournament, Tennessee wanted the regular-season SEC title, and the South Carolina Gamecocks stood in their way.

South Carolina has had an excellent season, fueled by the contributions of unlikely major contributors and a few key true freshmen. They were a game back in the standings and could have leapfrogged Tennessee if they won on Wednesday night. However, the Vols had other plans in mind.

Guard Dalton Knecht had a bounce-back outing after struggling from the field against the Crimson Tide. He netted 26 points against the No. 17 Gamecocks, including five three-pointers. Forward Jonas Aidoo had an important game near the basket, posting 14 points and nine rebounds against a stout South Carolina frontline. On Saturday, Tennessee still has a tough challenge against the No. 15 Kentucky Wildcats. They head into it knowing they are SEC champs, at least for now and have momentum heading into the SEC Tournament.
