Tennessee Confirms Game Against NC State, Releases Further Details
Last week, Jon Rothstein reported that Tennessee would be facing NC State in San Antonio on Dec. 16 as a part of the Vols’ non-conference schedule for 2023-24. Finally, on Wednesday, the Tennessee basketball program confirmed the report and released further details about the matchup with the Wolfpack. The game will indeed take place on December 16 and will be held at the AT&T Center, the home of the San Antonio Spurs. Tipoff time and television information will be released later, but this will be one of the two games to feature in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame’s Hall of Fame Series. The other matchup will be on the women’s side, with Baylor taking on Miami (Florida). Fans can expect to see tickets released in the middle of July.
There is one clear tie to NC State. Tennessee Associate head coach Justin Gainey played his college ball in Raleigh, averaging 6.9 points per game across his four-year college career. The Wolfpack will be a good test for the Vols, coming off of a season in which they reached the NCAA Tournament before falling to Creighton in the first round. It is no surprise to see Tennessee's schedule tough out of conference competition. Last season the Vols faced Gonzaga, Kansas, Maryland, and Arizona, and in 2021-22, they faced Villanova, UNC, Texas Tech, Memphis, and Arizona as well. This year, Tennessee is already slated to face Wisconsin and Illinois and is also a part of the Maui Invitational, which includes Kansas, Gonzaga, Purdue, Marquette, UCLA, and more.
