Another Day, Another Dub For Tobe Awaka And Team USA Under-19s
Team USA defeated Japan by a score of 105-61 in Friday’s FIBA Men’s Under-19 World Cup quarterfinal contest. Tobe Awaka had another strong performance, which is something we have become accustomed to so far in this tournament. He scored 14 points and grabbed ten rebounds for his third double-double of the tournament, his second in as many knockout stage games.
He was efficient again on Friday, going 6-for-9 from the field and a perfect 2-for-2 from the line. Six of his ten rebounds were on the offensive end. Awaka added a steal in his 15 minutes of play, and the Tennessee forward finished with a plus-21 rating, good for third-best on the team.
The game was tight at the start, with the United States leading after one quarter by just two points, 23-21. They found their groove, though, and the States won each of the next three quarters by at least 10 points en route to a 44-point win. In the semifinals, the US will face the winner of France and Serbia, with France having a big lead midway through. France finished second in Group A, while Serbia came out on top in Group C. France squares off with Awaka and the US on Saturday, July 1, with tipoff time currently set for 10:30 a.m. Eastern. The other semifinal is Spain taking on the host nation of Turkey, with Spain being the team to finish above France in Group A.
