Five-Star WR Bryant Wesco Is a Must-Impress For Tennessee
Tennessee had a lot of success getting athletes in space last season. Wide receiver Jalin Hyatt spent most of his season shaking loose for big yardage. He logged 1,267 receiving yards en route to a Bilitnekoff Award, the first winner in program history. Hyatt won his battles with speed and athleticism - five-star wide receiver Bryant Wesco has similar tools, and the Vols are beginning to push their chips in for him.
Wesco is a Texas native and has a family background of elite athleticism. The talented wideout doubles as a track star for Midlothian High School. He's a district champion in the long jump and triple jump; Wesco posted a 22'7.75" long jump and a 46-9.25 triple jump. The track background checks out on his high school tape. Wesco had 1,160 receiving yards and 17 touchdowns as a junior. He operated outside the hash marks as a Z-receiver, routinely creating separation with muscle twitch. Wesco suddenly comes out of his brakes, able to stop on a dime and hold his ground. His ankle dexterity is the most fascinating part of his game - he can get 90 degrees out of his break and beat defensive backs to the spot.
Tennessee hosts him on an official visit on June 23-25. It will be his first trip to Knoxville, and the Vols will do everything they can to impress him. They've shown the ability to wow out-of-state prospects. California five-star offensive tackle Brandon Baker called the Vols a "sleeper" in his recruitment over the weekend after one visit to Rocky Top. Missouri five-star defensive end Williams Nwaneri is trending toward Tennessee, Georgia five-star wide receiver Mike Matthews is trending toward Tennessee; the list goes on. The Oklahoma Sooners are in the driver's seat for Wesco, but they won't get him on an official visit during the summer. That should stave off a commitment and give Wesco time to think after his official visits.
Wesco can develop into a legitimate option at the SEC level. His speed allows him to operate underneath, and with the right coaching, he can develop into a downfield threat. He catches close to his body, which must improve as he goes higher. Tennessee wide receivers coach Kelsey Pope was a big factor in wide receiver Cedric Tillman becoming a reliable hands-catcher, and he could repeat it with Wesco.
