Commitment Day Preview: Final Thoughts On Daniel Calhoun
It's finally commitment day for four-star offensive tackle Daniel Calhoun (Marietta, Ga.). The 6-6.5 giant has been a national recruit since his freshman season of high school and is down to Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, and Texas. He made stops at each program on official visits this offseason and has decided where he intends to play his college football.
Few tackles will arrive at the college level as ready-made as Calhoun. He pass protects like an SEC veteran, routinely locating the right area on the defender's shoulder pads to grip and release before rebuffing their first pass-rush move. His frame is already difficult enough to deal with, but Calhoun does an excellent job hand-fighting and stopping edge rushers from getting leverage to capture the corner.
He could convert some weight in college, but he has the inverse problem that most offensive linemen have. Calhoun comes in at 350 pounds, about 25 pounds north of what most programs want him to play at in college. Shedding that weight shouldn't be difficult, and this could be a day-one SEC contributor for some squads. Tennessee certainly thinks so and will recruit him until early national signing day, regardless of his decision.
If they want to land him, I think they will have to. The allure of the in-state Georgia Bulldogs is a lot, and Calhoun has been a fan of head coach Kirby Smart for years. I think Georgia initially wins out in this recruitment. If Tennessee wants to land him ultimately, they must go all-in over the next five months.
