Squirrel White Touted As "Rising Superstar"
Head coach Josh Heupel has done a lot for Tennessee's offense. Every premium position player is highly respected, as the Volunteers' production from the past two seasons speaks for itself.
247Sports released a list of potential "rising superstars" for the 2023 season. Familiar names littered the list; Florida State's Jordan Travis, LSU's Malik Nabers, and Notre Dame's Joe Alt all excelled in 2022 and made the list.
Tennessee wide receiver Squirrel White also made the list. White tallied 30 catches for 481 yards and two touchdowns in his true freshman season, making him one of the top first-year contributors across college football.
However, 247 thinks he's in for an even bigger jump, similar to what Jalin Hyatt did for the Volunteers this season. Hyatt won the Biletnikoff Award after posting one of the most impressive seasons in Tennessee history.
"Hyatt opted out of the bowl game, which gave us a preview of the guy who is next in the slot for Tennessee — Squirrel White. All White did against Clemson was catch 9 passes for 108 yards and a touchdown in his true freshman finale. White isn’t the same type of receiver as Hyatt. He’s a bit smaller and a little shiftier in the open field, but they share one thing in common: Speed. White ran a verified 10.68-second 100-meter dash in high school. He should be a consistent deep threat for Joe Milton in 2023." - 247Sports
As the article mentioned, Tennessee will have a new face at quarterback this season. Joe Milton III is the odds-on favorite to win the starting job and has one of the strongest arms in college football.
It will be the first time Tennessee has had a new full-time starting quarterback since the 2020 season. Milton totaled nearly 1,000 passing yards, ten touchdowns, and zero interceptions during the 2022 season. Heupel's offense thrives on field-spacing to allow wideouts to break open downfield, which works well for Milton. They need a consistent downfield threat, and White should fill that role.
