Coveted local athlete Tommy Winton discusses his recruitment

2022 athlete Tommy Winton is one of the most electric athletes in his class. The local standout from Knoxville Catholic already holds six offers from Power 5 schools including Tennessee. Other SEC offers include Vanderbilt and Mississippi State. Winton is already making a big impact at Knoxville Catholic, and his role will only expand in the coming years. He discusses his recruitment and the home-state Vols here.
Winton said of his recruitment, “Other than who I have coming at me now, I have Georgia Tech, Clemson, Florida, and just pretty much all throughout the ACC and SEC.”
Winton said of staying in the Southeast and playing has an appeal because “growing up and watching UT play, it is home.”
There is a lot of time left until Winton’s class is on the clock, but that does not mean that he is not taking his recruitment serious at this stage. Winton said, “I pay attention to how schools use guys like me in their system, especially guys with my size and speed.”
The Vols have already started to make Winton a top priority in the 2022 class. Tennessee is recruiting Winton as a slot receiver right now, but he is interested to see how they use the role in the coming years.
Winton did note that even though he is being recruited as an athlete that he would, “prefer to play offense.”
The 5’10, 190lbs athlete could find himself being recruited as a defensive back in the coming years of his recruit with another growth spurt or two. Winton is agile, possesses a 31 inch vertical, and possesses a high football IQ. It will be interesting to see how teams can pitch a different side of the ball to Winton.
Winton is unsure at this time what he will do academically, or how long his recruitment might go. He is taking everything in stride as other offers are still looming. Winton did note at this time that there is no “dream offer” that he is waiting on.
Winton did not suit up this Friday for Knoxville Catholic due to injury, but he is expected back in the lineup in a short time.
