4-Star 2022 QB Braden Davis recaps visit, updates recruitment

Over the weekend, Tennessee hosted 2 high priority QBs in the class of 2022 to get an early head start on their recruitment. One of them was 4-Star QB and top 100 player out of Delaware, Braden Davis. We caught up with Davis in an interview regarding the visit and an update on his recruitment.

When asked about what stood out during the visit, Davis said “What stood out to me for this visit was the coaching staff. It was my first time getting to meet coach Weinke and coach Chaney so it was very interesting getting to talk to them and get an understanding for their philosophy.” So clearly it was very important for him to talk to the offensive coaching staff as it is for every Quarterback, and get an early relationship established there. When asked about which coaches stayed in contact the most, Davis said “Most of the contact that I have had with Tennessee has been through coach Niedemeyer and coach Graham. They like how I am a quarterback that is a very accurate passer who can make plays with my feet if I need to.” It sounds like the coaches at Tennessee understand the importance of mobility of a quarterback in today’s game, and Davis brings that to the table.

Now something noteworthy is that Davis’ dad is former Tennessee offensive lineman Antone Davis, a star player from the late 1980s and an NFL player from 1991-1999 for the Eagles, Falcons and Packers. We asked Davis about his dad's advice to him regarding not only UT but the recruiting process. He said “He’s just told me to enjoy the process and get to see everything that I can to try and make the best decision that I can.” As time has passed, you’ll see now more than ever recruits that had parents that were big time athletes at certain universities, sign with different schools than the ones their parents went to.

At the end of the day, recruits are gonna make the best decision for themselves and not what is in someone else’s best interest. However, one thing that can influence a QBs decision is playing time, because obviously only one can be on the field at a time. We asked Davis about how much playing time and depth charts will affect his decision and he said “Obviously I want to play right away when I get to college. Depth charts do not concern me because wherever I go, I am going to compete for the starting spot and there will always be competition at that level.”

Davis primary goal for this upcoming season is to “win the state championship.” As far as his recruitment is concerned, Davis has no timeline set. When asked about his commitment plans, he said “I do not have any timeline set for my recruitment. I have a ton of time to make a decision so I will just make a decision whenever I feel like I can comfortably make the best decision for myself.” It looks like this recruitment isn’t gonna end anytime soon, and that likely bodes well in Tennessee’s favor as they’ll have plenty of time to recruit him and evaluate where they want to go for the QB position in the 2022 class.
