Longhorns SS Mitchell Daly Entering Transfer Portal
Bursting onto the scene as a freshman, Mitchell Daly looked locked and loaded to be a cornerstone piece for the Texas Longhorns. Not only was he reliable at the plate but he also flashed elite defense.
As a freshman he slashed .316/.413/.416, posting the second best average behind only future Golden Spikes winner as a freshman. Earning his spot as a starter, the future was bright for the second baseman.
However, what came next in his next two seasons was a far shout from what he showed as a freshman. He slashed only .237/.351/.367 in 2022 and .231/.323/.403 in 2023, seeing himself benched in both seasons before playing his way back into the lineup in postseason play.
Now, though, it was revealed on Friday morning that Daly would be entering the transfer portal ahead of his senior season, looking for a change of scenery to end his career.
The talent is undeniably there for Daly, having earned Freshman All-American honors. Elite glovework and a bat that has potential to be great again, wherever he lands will be getting an impact starter.
For the Longhorns, all signs point to Jalin Flores taking over the starting shortstop spot in 2024. Flores struggled at times as a freshman this season, but showed what he can be. Namely, his performance in the Coral Gables Regional leaves room for hope that he can develop.
If Flores isn't the guy look for David Pierce and his staff to once again heavily recruit the transfer portal, looking to add an impact player at the shortstop position ahead of next year.
