WATCH: Texas Longhorns QB Quinn Ewers Dimes Xavier Worthy on TD vs. Houston
The No. 8 Texas Longhorns are off to a hot start in Saturday's meeting with the Houston Cougars at TDECU Stadium. Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers led a 75-yard touchdown drive on the game's first possession, connecting Adonai Mitchell for the score.
But it was Ewers' second touchdown throw of the quarter that was arguably more impressive. Faced with a 2nd and 3 near midfield, he let Xavier Worthy beat his defender downfield before dropping a near-perfect ball into the arms of his star receiver for a 42-yard touchdown.
The Longhorns built a 14-0 lead as a result. Take a look:
Headed into Saturday's game, Worthy had posted 34 catches for 463 yards and three touchdowns for the season.
Worthy now has 25 career touchdown grabs, which is third in school history. His first-quarter score on Saturday was his eighth career touchdown catch of 40-plus yards. It also marked his 11th career catch of 40 or more yards. X now has 25 TD receptions (No. 3 in UT history)
Worthy has been taking on a leader role this season and has been praised by coach Steve Sarkisian for his maturity. The receiver said after Texas' win over Alabama that the culture has gotten better, something that's a result of both he and his teammates' growth.
"I feel like this shows how our culture has gotten better," Worthy said. "It shows how we stay together as a team. Like I've been saying, the culture here is stronger than ever. I feel like we came in here as one... and showed that we are really together and we have something going on."
