BREAKING: Texas Longhorns QB Quinn Ewers To 'Miss Some Time' After Injury vs. Houston Cougars
The Texas Longhorns just suffered a major blow to their College Football Playoff hopes.
According to reports, the Longhorns are going to be without their star quarterback, Quinn Ewers for an extended time.
Ewers reportedly underwent an MRI Sunday, where it was determined that he suffered a grade 2 AC Joint sprain in his throwing shoulder in the team's 31-24 win over Houston.
Anwar Richardson of Rivals.com was the first to report the news.
The injury occurred on a sack earlier in the game, with Ewers attempting to play through the pain, per coach Steve Sarkisian. “He’s got a hurt shoulder and we will know more (Sunday),” Sarkisian said. “He tried to play through it, and we didn’t feel comfortable with where he was, and that’s when Maalik entered the game.”
Ewers finished the game completing 23 of 29 passes for 211 yards and two scores.
Last year vs. Alabama, Ewers suffered a sprained shoulder in his non-throwing shoulder and missed multiple weeks.
However, this injury is different, and there is optimism that Ewers could return this season, with the typical recovery for this type of injury lasting up to six weeks.
Should Ewers miss that amount of time, it would put him in line to return for a potential Big 12 Championship rematch with Oklahoma. The hope, however, is that he will be able to return before then.
In relief of Ewers on Saturday, Redshirt freshman Maalik Murphy came into the game and led the Longhorns on a touchdown drive in the fourth quarter, putting Texas back on top.
With Ewers being forced to miss extended time with his injury, Murphy would more than likely be the next man up for Texas, despite former No. 1 overall recruit Arch Manning sitting on the depth chart as well.
Murphy won the backup job behind Ewers following an excellent spring football performance, coupled with a great showing in spring football.
That said, Murphy and Manning have reportedly split second-team reps in practice this season.
