Why Greg McElroy Believes Texas Longhorns Should Be Ranked Ahead of Oregon Ducks

The College Football Playoff rankings have been a controversial topic over the past few weeks, especially when it comes to the Texas Longhorns.

While we all know that none of the initial College Football Playoff rankings truly matter because these things have a way of sorting themselves out, that doesn't stop fans and analysts alike from disagreeing with the rankings.

Former Alabama quarterback and current ESPN analyst Greg McElroy weighed in on where the Longhorns landed in the recent reveal of the rankings, which was again at No. 7 for the third week straight

This means that the committee has Texas slated as the second-best one-loss team behind the Pac-12 power that is the Oregon Ducks. A discrepancy that McElroy has with his own rankings, as he felt as if the Longhorns should be ranked higher than the Ducks due to their resume.

"They (Oregon) have one win against a team with a winning record at the moment. That team is Utah. Their next-best win is 4-5 Colorado. The next-best win after that is 4-5 Colorado State,” McElroy said.

McElroy made the case that Texas' resume warrants them the higher spot between the two.

“Whereas Texas has beaten five teams with a winning record including a win on the road in Tuscaloosa. Alabama's beaten four,” McElroy said.

Not to mention, according to ESPN's FPI, Texas does have the No. 5 strength of record compared to Oregon's No. 10, and they have the No. 10 strength of schedule compared to Oregon's No. 63.

If the committee values resume as much as they have said they do, they may need to do another deep dive into these two teams. The only reason that stands out as to why Oregon is ranked higher is because Texas has looked vulnerable with Maalik Murphy at the helm.

If Quinn Ewers returns and is able to pick up where he left off in terms of making the right plays and leading Texas to wins, the Longhorns will truly have a case to be made.
