How Will Kobe Boyce's Departure Affect the Texas Longhorns?
Texas cornerback Kobe Boyce announced Saturday morning that he will be stepping away from football.
In a lengthy post on social media, Boyce revealed that depression was a catalyst in the decision:
“For a few years now I have been battling depression and I let all of my emotions build up and it wasn’t a good feeling… I am going to be taking a step away from football and work on myself.”
Thoughts
Boyce stepped into the starting position last year, but his addition didn’t lead to much success for the Longhorns. Giving up a number of key plays, Boyce was a noticeable weak point for the Texas defense. First-team All-Big 12 cornerback D'Shawn Jamison took over the position following the LSU game. While Texas will miss the experience of Boyce at the position, I expect Kenyatta Watson and Josh Thompson to step up and provide a spark for Chris Ash’s defense.
Boyce ended the post stating that he will continue his education in the Forty Acres:
“I will continue as a student at the University of Texas and will continue on the journey of getting my degree. This decision wasn’t easy to make but I feel like it was much needed. I appreciate the fans and all the support that you have shown me in the years from a recruit to now. I will always be a Longhorn and I hope you guys can bring back a Big 12 Championship and a Natty. Love you all and I’m excited for my new journey.”
