AUSTIN, Texas -- The Texas Longhorns have officially signed 2024 four-star Cy-Fair (Cypress, Texas) quarterback Trey Owens.

Owens has continued to be high on Texas throughout the recruiting process, never appearing to waver from his commitment. He said the opportunity to play in big-time games helped lead him to the Longhorns.

"I felt like it gave me the best opportunity to go on to the next level," Owens said in March. "Also as a student, it's probably one of the best colleges that fit my assets I'd say. I feel like as big of a stage as it's on, the biggest in the United States honestly."

"You don't get to play Alabama, Texas A&M and Oklahoma every year everywhere else, it's just one place gets to do that."

The Cy-Fair product put together an impressive junior season, throwing for 2,057 yards and 34 touchdowns with just six interceptions while completing 66 percent of his passes - which landed him Texas District 17-6A offensive MVP.

As a senior, he helped lead his team to the 11-2 record while completing 222 of 313 passes for 3,303 yards, 43 touchdowns and five picks.

With the loss of quarterback Maalik Murphy to the transfer portal, Owens arrives to the Forty Acres with sights set on potentially being the third-string quarterback next season behind Quinn Ewers and Arch Manning, though the former hasn’t officially announced his return next season.

Several Schools Already Displaying Interest In Maalik Murphy

Manning got reps in the regular-season finale and the Big 12 title game. Though it’s impossible to predict what will be in store for Owens during his freshman year, there’s certainly a chance he could see the field and give Texas fans a short preview of what the future at quarterback looks like beyond next season.

When it comes to a Steve Sarkisian and A.J Milwee-led quarterback room, there’s plenty of reason for excitement considering the talent the Longhorns have had under center both this season and last.

Owens now fixes to add to that pedigree after officially putting the pen to paper on Wednesday.
