Texas football: Longhorns looks dominant against Owls

Texas looked downright dominant in a 48-13 victory over Rice.
The Longhorns scored on six of their first eight possessions, piling up a 31-0 halftime lead and extended it to 38-0 early in the third quarter before pulling their starters and calling off the dogs.
Playing without the No. 1 receiver Collin Johnson didn’t seem to bother Sam Ehlinger. The Texas quarterback connected on 23-of-27 passes for 279 yards and three touchdowns in two and a half quarters worth of work. He also added 27 yards on 11 carries.
Tough to do it much better than this.

Slot receivers Jake Smith (six catches for 75 yards and two touchdowns) and Devin Duvernay (six catches for 60 yards) stepped up in Johnson’s absence.
Redshirt freshman Malcolm Epps got his first career start in Johnson’s stead, finishing with four catches for 53 yards.
The Longhorns run game took a little while to get going, but finally came to life midway through the first half. Texas finished with 171 yards on 36 carries and two scores.
Keaontay Ingram led the way with 74 yards and two scores on 13 carries. Roschon Johnson continued to impress with 59 yards on 11 attempts and three catches for 30 yards.
Texas marched down the field on drives of 82, 90, 73, 79, 2 and 91 yards for scores with the first team offense.
While the offense was marching up and down the field, the defense was downright dominant. The Owls had just two first downs in the first half and went three and out on four of six possessions as Texas swarmed all over the run-based Rice scheme.
Rice scored a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to pull the score to 41-14 late in the fourth quarter, but the Longhorns got some final fireworks on the ensuing kickoff.
