WATCH: Longhorns WR AD Mitchell Snags 1st TD of Season

AD Mitchell has his first touchdown as a member of the Texas Longhorns.

AUSTIN, Texas -- The Texas Longhorns had an up-and-down first half of football against the Rice Owls at DKR on Saturday.

But things picked up a bit for coach Steve Sarkisian's offense once the third quarter rolled around.

Already holding a 16-3 lead coming out of halftime, the Longhorns stopped the Owls on the first possession of the second half. This allowed the offense to get set up in the red zone, where quarterback Quinn Ewers found new receiver AD Mitchell for a nine-yard touchdown. Texas built a 23-3 lead over Rice as a result.

Take a look:

Mitchell won two titles during his time with the Georgia Bulldogs, and despite some injury issues, came up clutch on the big stage when his team needed it most. Four of Mitchell's 21 career games at Georgia came in the College Football Playoff. Incredibly, he caught a touchdown in all four of those contests on just eight total receptions.

This makes his journey back to his home state this season a notable one, as he's arriving to Austin for of campaign full of major expectations for the Longhorns.

The Longhorns had fallen behind 3-0 early on Saturday after turning it over on downs on the game's first possession. But Ewers' connection with Xavier Worthy was on point in the first half, which helped lead to the offense getting in position for a 37-yard catch-and-run for a touchdown by running back Jonathon Brooks on Texas' second possession. This marked Texas' first touchdown of the day early in the game.

The Longhorns will look to keep this offensive momentum going headed into the fourth quarter.
