Texas Longhorns Stay Put In Latest AP Top-25 Poll
The Texas Longhorns nearly saw their College Football Playoff hopes dwindle away as Chris Tennant's 45-yard field goal sent the game into overtime Saturday at Royal-Memorial Stadium,
Bert Auburn's leg was the difference, though little has changed in the current Associated Press Poll.
The Longhorns remained idle at No. 7 in the latest edition of the AP Poll Sunday morning following their 33-30 victory over Kansas State. Only one change was made to the top 10, with Ole Miss moving into the No. 10 spot following Oklahoma's loss to Oklahoma State in the final Bedlam Series.
Texas' offense was explosive to begin the game behind quarterback Maalik Murphy in his second start. The redshirt freshman hurled a 37-yard touchdown pass to Adonai Mitchell to put the Longhorns (8-1, 5-1 Big 12) up 7-0. Touchdown runs by C.J. Baxter and Jonathon Brooks, helped Texas take a 27-7 lead entering the closing minutes of the third quarter.
But the Wildcats (6-3, 4-2), who last season won the Big 12 Championship thanks to exceptional offensive play design, wouldn't go away quietly. Will Howard connected three times through the air for touchdowns to Phillip Brooks, Keegan Johnson, and Jayce Brown, respectively to tie the game at 27.
Texas regained the lead on Auburn's 34-yard field goal with 6:03 left before Tennant's last-second equalizer.
For as good as Murphy was in the first half, struggles ensued in the second. An interception to Jacob Parrish — and later fumble recovery — led to Howard's second touchdown pass. Brooks fumbled several plays later, leading to the eventual tie.
Auburn drilled a 42-yard field goal in overtime to break the 30-30 tie. Facing fourth down at Texas' 4-yard line, K-State kept the offense on the field and tried to end the game. Howard corraled by Byron Murphy and Barryn Sorrell before throwing an incomplete pass to seal the victory.
Georgia remained No. 1 after defeating No. 14 Missouri at home. The Bulldogs have now tied the second-longest streak atop the poll at 21 straight weeks,
Georgia received 49 first-place votes, while No. 2 Michigan picked nine. No. 3 Ohio State had three votes and No. 4 Florida State had two.
Washington and Oregon picked up wins over USC and Cal, respectively to remain at No. 5 and No. 6. The Rebels, who escaped the jaws of defeat against Texas A&M with a 38-35 win, pushed its way into the top 10 for the first time this season.
Texas hits the road the next two weeks, first at TCU and then Iowa State, before returning to Royal-Memorial Stadium for the Nov. 24 regular-season finale against Texas Tech.
