'Screw Them!': Longhorns Blasted by Houston Coach Dana Holgorsen
AUSTIN, Texas -- When the Commissioner of your own conference is against you, it's far from a surprise when an opposing Big 12 head coach feels the same way.
Dana Holgorsen is all too familiar with the Big 12 due to his time at Texas Tech, West Virginia and Oklahoma State. Now entering his fifth season as the head coach of the newly-arriving Houston Cougars, where he's also previously been an assistant, he's making sure to stir the pot with the SEC-bound Texas Longhorns before the two teams meet this season.
"Screw them. They can go wherever they want," Holgorsen said on his radio show, via the Houston Chronicle. "They don’t want us and we don’t want them."
Holgorsen had been asked by a guest on the show about both Texas and Texas A&M, as his comments were directed at both programs. But this is certainly more relevant as it pertains to the Longhorns. They'll have to make the short drive over to U of H to face the Cougars this season on Saturday, Oct. 21 at TDECU Stadium, marking the first meeting between the two teams in over two decades.
The Longhorns lead the all-time series 16-7-2. The last meeting came in 2002, which ended in a 41-11 blowout win for Texas. Houston's last win in the series happened in 1991, as the Longhorns have won seven straight.
These comments from Holgorsen come after Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark recently publicly backed the Texas Tech Red Raiders ahead of their season-ending matchup against Texas later this year.
“Coach [Joey McGuire], I’m not going to put any pressure on you, but I’m going to be in Austin on Thanksgiving," Yormark said. "And you better take care of business like you did right here in Lubbock last year.”
Sarkisian's response to Yormark's comments could fit toward Holgorsen's remarks as well.
"I got a letter from the commissioner on sportsmanship the day before that speech, and so I'm trying to figure out what are we promoting to our student athletes and then to go say those types of things," Sarkisian said Monday.
The kickoff time for the Longhorns vs. Cougars matchup will be announced at a later date.
