Texas Longhorns Have College Football Playoff Case For 'Best One-Loss Team'

Despite their loss to the Oklahoma Sooners, the Texas Longhorns have made a College Football Playoff Case
In this story:

The Texas Longhorns are sitting at 7-1 and are ranked No. 7 in the country heading into their matchup on Saturday against the Kansas State Wildcats

But before they host the Wildcats, the Horns await their initial standing in the College Football Playoff Rankings, which are set to be released on Tuesday night.

In anticipation of those rankings, ESPN's Heather Dinich made the case for the Longhorns in the rankings, arguing that they have one of the best resumes in the country for a one-loss team.

Dinich also made the case for the Oregon Ducks, whose one loss of the season game against the No. 5 Washington Huskies.

“I think Texas and Oregon both have the best statements, best resumes, in terms of making that case for the best one-loss team,” Dinich said. “I do think that the Texas win against Alabama in Tuscaloosa is the best nonconference win of the season. I would still say that Washington’s win against Oregon is overall the best win as we sit here right now.”

Both team's losses also came against top-10 opponents on last-second scores. Oregon fell on a last-second field goal to Washington, while the Horns lost on a heart-breaking final drive to Oklahoma.

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian also made his case for the Horns during his Monday press conference, lauding the Longhorns' resume, including their dominant 34-24 win over the Crimson Tide.

"I'd argue we have the best win in the country right now," Sarkisian said. "The fact that we go into Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and beat a team that was 52-1 in the previous 53 games."

The rankings are set to be released at 6 p.m. CT on Tuesday.
