Former Longhorns DB DeShon Elliott Signs With Miami Dolphins
Former Texas Longhorns defensive back DeShon Elliott now has an opportunity to start elsewhere.
The Miami Dolphins have agreed to terms with Elliott for the upcoming season. Elliott, who'll turn 26 in April, joins an AFC East defense that now has a secondary featuring All-Pro cornerbacks Jalen Ramsey and Xaiven Howard, along with rising safety Jevon Holland.
A former sixth-round pick in 2018, Elliott spent his first four seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, playing in 42 games and recording 35 starts. He became the primary starting strong safety after a breakout 2020 campaign in place of former Texas defensive back Earl Thomas.
Elliott totaled 205 tackles, two interceptions, and 3.5 sacks during his time in Baltimore. Last offseason, he inked a one-year prove-it deal with the Detroit Lions and impressed, recording 96 tackles and one interception in 13 starts.
Miami was reportedly interested in Buffalo Bills star Jordan Poyer, but the 31-year-old elected to return to Orchard Park on a two-year deal. Elliott, who played with current Dolphins' safety Brandon Jones on the Forty Acres, should have experience working in a 3-4 man defensive look under new coordinator Vic Fangio.
A staple for the Longhorns' secondary, Elliott played in 26 games from 2015-17. He registered 105 total tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, nine interceptions, and 2.5 sacks. Elliott was named to the first-team All-Big 12 roster and was a unanimous All-American in 2017.
