Texas Longhorns DT T'Vondre Sweat Earns Unanimous All-American Honors
The Texas Longhorns have one of the most dominant forces in all of college football on their defensive line in T'Vondre Sweat.
The 2023 Outland Trophy Award winner, which is given to the nation’s best interior lineman, has been named a first-team All-America by the Associated Press, the Football Writers Association of America, the Sporting News and Walter Camp Football Foundation. On top of that, it was revealed on Thursday that he was also named a first-team All-American by the American Football Coaches Association in a unanimous fashion.
He was joined by teammates Xavier Worthy and Kelvin Banks Jr. as well, as they were both named to the second team. As for Sweat, he became the 24th Longhorn in program history to earn unanimous All-American honors, and the fifth defensive tackle to do so, joining Scott Appleton (1963), Brad Shearer (1977), Steve McMichael (1979) and Kenneth Sims (1981).
In total, the release revealed that he is just the sixth defensive lineman to do so in total, and the last Longhorns that did receive the honor was Brian Orakpo back in 2008.
On the season, Sweat has been a major force, and practically has shut down the middle of the field for the Texas defense. This season he has recorded 42 total tackles, two sacks, and also added five pass deflections. On the offensive side of the ball, he also recorded a receiving touchdown in the Big 12 title game.
The fifth-year senior came to Texas as a three-star recruit, and chose the Longhorns over programs like Alabama, Texas A&M, and Arkansas.
