Longhorns' Steve Sarkisian Ready for Either Kansas QB, Reveals Who He Thinks is Faster
The Texas Longhorns still aren't quite sure which quarterback they'll be facing when they travel to Lawrence Saturday to take on the Kansas Jayhawks.
But whether it's Jalon Daniels or Jason Bean at the helm -- both of who are proven signal-callers -- Texas coach Steve Sarkisian is still respecting what Kansas' offense can do.
"The system isn’t going to change, and they’ve got a very good system offensively," he said. "You have to prepare for the system, but I do think it is important to know in-game which quarterback is in there and how we need to defend him as the game goes on.”
Last season, Kansas beat Texas 57-56 in overtime in Austin. Daniels helped lead the upset, going 21 of 30 passing for 202 yards and three touchdowns while rushing 11 times for 45 yards and another score.
But this season, a shoulder injury has kept him out since the loss to the TCU Horned Frogs on Oct. 8, giving opponents a chance to look at Bean. He could return against Texas on Saturday.
And even though Sarkisian saw firsthand the impact that Daniels' dual-threat ability can have, he's still taking Bean in a foot race.
"I think both quarterbacks are very equipped at running it," Sarkisian said. "I would probably say Bean may be faster than Daniels. When he gets to the open field, he’s got straight-line speed."
But while both are starting-caliber quarterbacks, the Jayhawks are likely better with Daniels at the helm given his experience. The fact he beat the Longhorns last season certainly helps too.
"I think one thing Daniels has is he’s got a really good feel for the game of football," Sarkisian said. "We felt that last year in our game when they started him and we didn’t know it. He’s got a knack for layering throws down the field. He’s very elusive and can slip out of tackles to extend plays with his legs or his arm."
Kansas (6-4) and Texas (6-4) kickoff from Lawrence at 2:30 p.m. CT Saturday.
