Austin Native Spencer Barnett Commits to Texas Longhorns
Austin Westlake kicker Spencer Barnett made waves with his decision to commit to the University of Texas on Friday. Following his de-commitment from Colorado State, Barnett Opted to become a preferred walk-on for the Longhorns' class of 2024.
Barnett's talent was on full display last fall when he successfully kicked a 59-yard field goal during a game against Ridge Point, capturing the attention of many and cementing his reputation as a standout kicker.
Barnett expressed his enthusiasm to 247Sports for the decision, highlighting Texas' unparalleled combination of athletic and academic prospects, deep-rooted tradition, and supportive community.
"I've grown up in Austin as a Texas fan, and to be able to play for them is a dream come true," Barnett said.
Following Texas' offer of a preferred walk-on spot to Barnett this spring, the kicker made the choice to switch his commitment from Colorado State to the Longhorns. With his ranking as the No. 57 kicker and No. 20 punter by Kohl's Kicking, Barnett's talent has been recognized and lauded across multiple events.
Notably, he excelled at the Underclassman Challenge in January 2023, scoring impressively in punting, kick-offs, and field goals. Barnett's inclusion in Texas' specialist lineup adds depth alongside All-American punter Michael Kern, who is set to join the team this summer and is expected to take on punting duties as a true freshman.
