Texas Longhorns Miss Out on Major Recruiting Targets

Texas legacies and highly-ranked brothers Tommy and James Brockermeyer choose Alabama over Texas

The Texas Longhorns missed out on a pair of highly-ranked legacy offensive linemen when both Tommy and James Brockermeyer made their verbal pledges to the Alabama Crimson Tide on Friday.

The brothers are the sons of former Texas Longhorns All American Blake Brockermeyer. Their grandfather played for legendary Texas head coach Darrell Royal.

SI All American's John Garcia broke down both players' potential.

On Tommy Brockermeyer: is an impressive physical specimen on a near ideal prep frame for a future blindside protector role at a major football program. His last year or so suggests he can pack on good, functional weight with relative ease, something that will help him play fluid football at well over 300 pounds at the next level. Brockermeyer profiles like a future top NFL Draft pick.

On James Brockermeyer: Think Ryan Kelly. A flawless technician that doesn’t have to win with overbearing power or athleticism, though it’s there. Kelly was also a bit underweight in high school as well, then left Alabama as a first round draft pick after winning the Rimington Award in 2015.

What it means for Texas: It's certainly a big loss for the Longhorn class. Any time a pair of potential five-star offensive linemen bolt from the ranks of Texas high school football to head out of state, it hurts. When it's a pair of potential third-generation Longhorns who do it it clearly hurts more.

That being said Herb Hand has proven himself to be one of the better offensive line recruiters and developers in the area over the past few years and the Longhorns have their sites set on several more targets. Hayden Connor is already verbally committed to the class and looks to have tremendous upside. Texas is also still very much in the mix for Duncanville's Savion Byrd at tackle, Katy Taylor's Bryce Foster at guard and center Michael Myslinski out of Jacksonville, Florida.
