Bears Drafted Longhorns 'Leader' in RB Roschon Johnson
The Texas Longhorns have had no shortage of running backs come through Austin on their way to the NFL. From Earl Campbell to D'Onta Foreman, the running back position has always been a strong suit for Texas.
Now, two more Longhorns are set to add their names to the long list of Texas legends at the position with both Bijan Robinson and Roschon Johnson hearing their names called in the draft in the first and fourth rounds respectively.
While Robinson has gotten his fair share of headlines as a first-round pick, Johnson has gotten plenty of praise as well - with Steve Sarkisian lauding his leadership ability.
“Ro was the leader of our football team and was a guy that held himself and his teammates accountable each and every day,” said Sarkisian. “He’s highly competitive, very mature, and has an unbelievable work ethic."
"He’s an awesome team guy that beyond all of his speed, power and explosiveness, is extremely tough. He can play all three downs at running back, is excellent on special teams, and he’ll bring a great deal on and off the field to the Chicago Bears.”
Johnson joins a talented running back room in Chicago that features Khalil Herbert and a fellow Longhorn running back in Foreman. He might not start from day one but was excited just to hear his name called.
"It’s hard to describe. It's everything, a lot of emotion all at once," Johnson said. "Really my mind kind of went blank, it’s just hard to explain. I was just in the moment, really. They called my name on the screen and everyone was cheering, and it was so amazing to have their support."
"Just to see them here, cheering me on, it brings back so many childhood memories of all the people who brought me up along the way. It was just a special moment."
Despite not being the likely starter for the Bears immediately, Johnson had his NFL dream come true. Now he's off to the Windy City looking to cement his name as the next great Texas running back.
