Texas vs. OU Rivalry Officially Has A New Name... Kinda
In the 2023 edition of the annual Texas Longhorns-Oklahoma Sooners meeting, it will be sponsored by Allstate, according to a release.
The game will also replace the "Showdown" name for "Rivalry," making the official name: the Allstate Red River Rivalry. Next season will mark the third time in the rivalry's soon-to-be 119-game history that a sponsor has been attached to it, as SBC sponsored the 100th meeting in 2005 and in 2014 it became the AT&T Red River Showdown.
βWe are thrilled to have such an outstanding, longtime Texas Longhorns partner as Allstate come on board to sponsor the greatest rivalry in all of college football," Texas athletics director Chris Del Conte said in a release. "There is no better tradition than the Red River Rivalry in a more unique and perfect atmosphere like the State Fair of Texas and the Cotton Bowl with βThe Line,β the Golden Hat trophy and all of the pageantry and passion of both universities on full display.β
Despite the name change, much of the game's history remains the same as it will still take place at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas on the first Saturday in October.
The 119th edition will be played on Oct. 7 on ABC for the final time as Big 12 foes. The Longhorns and Sooners will move to the Southeastern Conference in 2024.
