CBS Projects Texas Longhorns To Miss College Football Playoff

The Texas Longhorns are among the eight teams that are vying for a spot in the College Football Playoff.

There is just one week remaining in the college football season, and there are about eight teams that currently are in the mix for the College Football Playoff.

One of those teams, and for the first time in a hot minute, is the No. 7 Texas Longhorns. Texas is currently sitting at 10-1 on the year with their lone loss coming at the hands of Oklahoma, but they have established themselves as one of the top one-loss teams and are often viewed as a team that will be one of the final four standing.

However, despite having them projected to make the College Football Playoff a week ago, CBS Sports' Jerry Palm now has them on the outside looking in in his latest bowl projections. He now has Texas projected to be playing in the Fiesta Bowl against Tulane. Palm cited the fact that if Oregon were to win out, they'd surely get the nod over the Longhorns.

The perfect scenario for Texas to get into the College Football Playoff is for Oregon to drop another game, Florida State to lose, Georgia to lose, and Michigan to lose to Ohio State. While this doesn't guarantee a spot in the top four, it would really make the committee evaluate resumes and head-to-head matchups, which should work in their favor in terms of Alabama.

All Texas can do at this moment is ensure that they hold up their end of the bargain, which means that they have to handle business on Friday against Texas Tech. A team that has beaten them three times since 2015, all of which have been in Austin.
