Longhorn Quinn Ewers Lands on Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award Watch List
Landing on the watch lists of the Maxwell Award, the Davey O’Brien Award, and the Walter Camp Player of the Year did not seem to be enough for Texas Longhorns redshirt sophomore and starting quarterback Quinn Ewers.
His grind in the offseason has placed himself on another watch list - the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award watch list, the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Educational Foundation, Inc. announced on Tuesday.
The Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award honors the top senior or upperclassman quarterback set to graduate with their class.
To give some historical context, 18-year veteran of the NFL, Johnny Unitas, was a University of Louisville star before joining the Baltimore Colts in 1958. During his career, he recorded 2,830 pass completions for 40,239 yards, 290 touchdowns and throwing a touchdown pass in 47 consecutive games.
Ewers, who is entering his second season with the Longhorns as starting quarterback, played and started in 10 games last season, missing the remaining due to an injury. Last year, he completed 172 of his 296 passing attempts for a total of 2177 yards, 15 touchdowns and six interceptions.
Ewers had a standout game in the Alamo Bowl against Washington in the final game of the postseason last year, connecting on 31-of-47 passes for 369 yards and one touchdown, recording personal highs in both passing yardage and completions.
Since 1987, the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award has been given annually, but only one Texas Longhorns has secured the award in all of its history - Colt McCoy in 2009.
On Thursday, Dec. 7, this year's Golden Arm award winner will be presented the honor by The Johnny Unitas Educational Foundation President, John Unitas, Jr.
