AUSTIN - Texas Longhorns linebacker S'Maje Burrell plans to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal when it opens on Monday, he announced via social media on Thursday.

"I would like to thank god for the opportunity of being at the University of Texas," Burrell said in the announcement "I want to thank my family and brothers for supporting me. I am extremely grateful for Coach Sark and the Longhorn staff. I will be entering the NCAA Transfer Portal with four years of eligibility."

Burrell was suspended indefinitely from the program for conduct detrimental to the team, resulting from his involvement in the incident that led to the DWI arrest of Longhorns defensive tackle and NFL Draft hopeful T'Vondre Sweat.

On Wednesday evening, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian released a statement on the situation surrounding Burrell, announcing the suspension.

“We’re aware of the situation involving S’Maje Burrell and have suspended him indefinitely from all team activities for conduct detrimental to the program,” Sarkisian said.

According to the arrest affidavit from the incident, Sweat was rear-ended by another vehicle, causing the accident. Once police arrived on the scene and performed a sobriety test on Sweat, he failed, leading to the charge.

The driver of the other vehicle was later identified in a report from LonestarLive.com. He was not arrested or charged in the incident.

Burrell, who was a four-star recruit and a key signing of the 2023 class, ranked as the No. 59 player in the state of Texas and the No. 33 linebacker in the country. He never appeared in a game for the Longhorns in his one season with the team.
