Injury Update: Who's In & Who's Out in Longhorns Orange-White Spring Game
The Texas Longhorns will return to the DKR for the first time since their season finale win against Baylor to do battle in the annual Orange-White game, presented by the Texas One Fund.
During his final media session before Saturday's kickoff, Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian announced that two players would not suit up for the event.
"DJ Campbell will not play Saturday," Sarkisian said. "Jalen Catalon will not play Saturday. Those are probably the two off the top of my head I can tell you for certain will not play Saturday.”
Catalon, a transfer from Arkansas, is expected to fight for starting reps at strong safety opposite Jerrian Thompson. Limited in practice this spring after suffering a season-ending shoulder injury in Week 1's win over Cincinnati with the Hogs, Catalon is expected to make a full recovery before the start of the regular season.
A native of Mansfield, Catalon was initially courted by the Longhorns under then-coach Tom Herman but elected to head to the SEC West program in hopes of playing both football and baseball. While he never reached the diamond, Catalon started 21 games for the Razorbacks, totaling 159 career tackles and five interceptions.
Campbell, a 6-3 interior offensive lineman, received high praise from Sarkisian for his development this spring. Last season as a freshman, the former four-star played in seven games, primarily used as a depth piece behind Cole Hutson.
When asked about running backs Jonathon Brooks and Keilan Robinson, Sarkisian said they could see reps, but nothing is guaranteed entering the week. Both Brooks and Robinson have been limited this spring after dealing with offseason injuries.
“Keilan would probably be the one that won’t be able to go," Sarkisian said.
Robinson, a former speedster at Alabama when Sarkisian served as the Crimson Tide's offensive coordinator, was the No. 3 running back last season behind Bijan Robinson and Roschon Johnson. He totaled 305 scrimmage yards and three touchdowns while also being a factor on special teams.
Brooks, a native of Hallettsville, proved that he could be the immediate replacement for Robinson toward the season's end. Against Kansas, Brooks rushed for a season-high 108 yards and scored two touchdowns. He also scored a pair of touchdowns and totaled 55 yards of offense in the Alamo Bowl loss to No. 12 Washington.
With Robinson and Brooks both out, freshman C.J. Baxter has fluctuated his role between the first and second-team offense. Baxter is projected to have a similar role to Brooks last season as the team's No. 3 runner.
Kickoff from DKR is scheduled for 1 p.m.
