WATCH: Texas DL Byron Murphy 'Switches' to Offense, Catches TD vs. Wyoming
AUSTIN, Texas -- The No. 4 Texas Longhorns got off to a slow start in Saturday's meeting with the Wyoming Cowboys at DKR.
But in the second quarter, they finally got into the end zone behind the big presence of an unlikely source.
Standout Texas defensive lineman Byron Murphy II is one of the leaders of the Longhorns' talented d-line, but has apparently been practicing his skills as a receiver. Faced with a 2nd and goal at the one-yard line, Murphy lined up at fullback, but then crept out toward the right on his route after some play-action work for Quinn Ewers.
Murphy had the Wyoming defense lost and got free for a score as a result. The touchdown put the Longhorns in front 10-7 after a long 17-play, 90-yard drive.
Take a look:
Headed into Saturday, Murphy had posted five tackles and half a sack during the first two games. In his Texas career, he's tallied 44 total tackles and 3.5 sacks.
Murphy II was a key clog in the interior to a vastly improved defense last season.
A Texas team that was expected to get into multiple shootouts due to a coach Steve Sarkisian-led offense and inconsistent defense instead had these roles flipped at multiple times throughout the season, as the defense ranked 30th in the country in fewest points allowed per game (21.2) and finished with the second-fewest yards allowed per game in the Big 12.
Murphy and the Longhorns will look to keep things churning headed into the second half of Saturday's contest.
