Quinn Ewers' Draft Stock Remains A Mystery
There has always been hype surrounding Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers, but now in what is his second year as the Longhorns starter, it is time for him to prove himself.
Not only in order to keep Texas on their current trajectory which has them squarely in the mix to make the College Football Playoff, but also to help his NFL Draft stock. Something that has seemingly improved dramatically following their win over Alabama, but has also seen some people question it due to lackluster performances like this last week against Wyoming.
The Week 3 showing against Wyoming has hurt him in the eyes of some analysts like ESPN's Mel Kiper having Colorado's Shedeur Sanders ranked ahead of him. On the other hand, ESPN's Matt Miller is still confident that Ewers has the tools to be QB3 behind Caleb Williams and Drake Maye.
"Ewers. As Jordan mentioned, he didn't play like QB3 in an uneven performance against Wyoming on Saturday night, but the potential is still there. Ewers has the arm strength, pocket mobility and field vision of a first-round quarterback. But he has to have more top-tier games, like the one against Alabama, over the rest of the season to secure QB3 status -- especially in a quarterback group that is as deep as I can remember."
Ewers has struggled in Texas' two non-conference games against Rice and Wyoming with Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian suggesting those two opponents changed their defense from week to week which may have played a factor.
Regardless, both Texas and Ewers' draft stock need the young quarterback to get to a point in his game where he's able to perform like he did against Alabama. He doesn't need Heisman moments every week, but more accuracy on deep passes and hitting on the routine throws would help a ton.
