Longhorns Land Commitment from 2023 4-Star G Chris Johnson
AUSTIN, Texas -- The Texas Longhorns have experienced some heartbreak this offseason as far as the 2023 recruiting class is concerned. The decommitments of signees Ron Holland and A.J. Johnson left a gaping hole in the incoming freshman class, which was suddenly left with zero commits.
But along with a haul of talented transfers, the Longhorns have now helped make up for their losses with a new freshman commitment.
Former Kansas Jayhawks signee and 2023 Montverde Academy guard Chris Johnson announced his pledge to Texas on Monday. The Missouri City (Houston) native had the Longhorns in his final three, picking them over the likes of the Arkansas Razorbacks and Washington Huskies.
Johnson, a four-star guard per 247Sports' player rankings, is now the only member of Texas' 2023 freshman class.
“I wanted to be closer to my family," Johnson told On3. "I’ve always wanted to play for Texas basketball and wanted to start my legacy with 'Texas' on the front of my jersey.”
Johnson had signed his letter of intent with Kansas in Nov. 2022, but decommitted and requested a release on June 3.
The Longhorns now unofficially swap players with the Jayhawks, who landed a transfer commitment from former Texas guard Arterio Morris earlier this offseason.
