Texas Longhorns Coach Rodney Terry Updates Injury Status of Dylan Disu, Kadin Shedrick
AUSTIN -- The Texas Longhorns played in front of fans for the first time since last season during the Orange-White scrimmage on Tuesday at Gregory Gym on campus.
However, projected starting big men Dylan Disu (foot) and Kadin Shedrick (both shoulders) still remain sidelined due injuries that they've been dealing with this offseason. Texas coach Rodney Terry provided an update on the pair after Tuesday's scrimmage.
“The thing with both Kadin and Disu, we’re playing the long game with those guys,” Terry said. “Those guys are a big part of our season. We have a chance to be really, really good with those guys out there. We’re going to be good already, but we’ll be a lot better if we have both of those guys in the lineup as well."
Based on Terry's comments, Shedrick could be set to play in the season opener at home against Incarnate Word on Monday, Nov. 6. However, Disu could be for the first month of the season, as Terry mentioned December as a roughly unofficial return date.
“Kadin is progressing really well right now. If everything continues on the trend he’s heading right now, he’s going to have a chance to play here really soon," Terry said. "We’re playing the long game with Disu because we want him for the whole season. If that goes into November and the first of December, no problem. We have other guys who’ll have opportunities to step up and get things done. We want him to be able to come back and be able to play at the level when he left.”
Shedrick and Disu were both team captains during Tuesday's scrimmage, but it was fellow big men Ze'Rik Onyema and Dillon Mitchell that stole the show in their absence. Mitchell had 10 points, six rebounds, one assist and three blocks on 5 of 6 shooting while Onyema had nine points, six rebounds, and one block on 4 of 5 shooting.
"I know my role and I think that's what it takes to help us win," Mitchell said after the scrimmage." ... When it comes to defense, just making plays for the team. Obviously we're down out of our two bigs right now, Dylan Disu and Kadin, so we gotta have rim protection around the rim, and I know I've gotta step up and provide that for the team."
