Longhorns Joining UConn, Two Others in 2023 Empire Classic at MSG
AUSTIN -- After competing at the Jimmy V Classic in 2022, the Texas Longhorns are heading back to Madison Square Garden next season.
On Tuesday, it was announced that the Longhorns will compete in the 2023 Empire Classic at the historic venue in New York City on Nov. 19 and 20 as part of their non-conference slate.
Texas will be in a four-team field that includes the Indiana Hoosiers, Louisville Cardinals and defending national champion UConn Huskies. The matchups and tip-off times for the event are still TBD.
This will mark Texas' seventh appearance in the event. The Longhorns have competed at the Empire Classic in 1997, 2002, 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2019, winning the event in the 2014 after taking down California in a 71-55 win in the championship game.
Texas will have a chance to right some wrongs of the past, as the program is a combined 6-11 in all-time meetings against the three other teams at the event.
The Longhorns are 3-6 in the all-time series against UConn, 1-4 against Louisville and 2-1 against Indiana. The most recent meeting with any of these three came against the Hoosiers in 2020, as Texas won that game 66-44.
