Longhorns to Face LSU Tigers Next Season - Details

Three of the last five meetings between the Texas Longhorns and LSU Tigers has gone to overtime. Could the two sides provide more thrills next season when they clash for non-conference play?
In this story:

AUSTIN, Texas -- The Texas Longhorns will be getting a feel for the SEC one season before they make the official move to the prestigious conference.

The Longhorns will be facing off with the LSU Tigers next season in non-conference play, Texas coach Rodney Terry told college basketball insider Jon Rothstein.

The game will be a neutral-site contest played at the Toyota Center in Houston, home of the Houston Rockets. However, the date and time of the bout is yet to be revealed.

“It’s going to be a great game,” Terry told Rothstein. “It’s a great area for us in terms of recruiting. We’re going to bring our brand to Houston and LSU will do the same. It’s a marquee matchup for us both.”

Texas is just 9-19 against LSU all time, with the last meeting coming at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin on Jan. 25, 2020. The Longhorns suffered a close 69-67 loss in that one.

Despite this poor overall record against the Tigers, three of the last fives meetings between the two sides has gone to overtime. One of the those games ended in a 76-75 win for unranked Texas over No. 9 LSU in December 2006, which marked the last win for the Longhorns in the series.

LSU is coming off a forgettable 14-19 season that included a brutal 2-16 record in SEC play. Despite starting 12-1 after a big 60-57 win over No. 9 Arkansas to begin conference play, the Tigers stumbled through a 14-game losing streak, halting what had looked like a promising season.

But both teams could look much different for their battle in Houston, making it anyone's game in a matchup of SEC foes that's just one year too early.
