Longhorns Pull Away From No. 25 TCU, Secure Big Road Win
Coming off back-to-back Big 12 losses, things hardly got easier for the Texas Longhorns on Saturday in Fort Worth against the No. 25 TCU Horned Frogs. The contest marked the fifth of what will be six straight games vs. ranked conference opponents for Texas.
But with their backs against the wall and with "Horns Down" signage littered across the TCU student section, the Longhorns answered the call.
Max Abmas scored every point during a late 11-0 run as part of his game-high 21 points and the Longhorns pulled away from TCU in a much-needed 77-66 win.
Texas (15-7, 4-5) also got a double-double from Dillon Mitchell (13 points, 11 rebounds) while Dylan Disu added 15 points, seven rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Kadin Shedrick finished with nine points and Chendall Weaver had seven points and four rebounds in his first start of the season.
TCU (16-6, 5-4) got a team-high 15 points from Emanuel Miller while Avery Anderson (13 points) and Trevian Tennyson (10 points) added double-digit scoring efforts. Ja'Kobe Coles finished with 10 points off the bench.
The Longhorns responded after things looked grim early. Texas quickly fell into a 10-point hole at 16-6, commuting some sloppy turnovers in the process.
Momentum was in TCU's favor behind a rowdy home crowd, but Disu led a 10-0 run that featured a backdoor assist to Abmas, a pair of triples, and a vicious block on defense to give Texas a 30-25 lead.
The two teams then traded multiple turnovers during the final few minutes of the half, but Mitchell and Kadin Shedrick helped lead an 8-0 to end the half. After trailing by double digits, the Longhorns suddenly had 43-32 lead at halftime.
Disu and Mitchell both had 10 points apiece at the half. The Longhorns had seven steals, won the rebounding battle 17-9, and had 26 points in the paint.
Unsurprisingly, a tough TCU squad answered to start the second half. Coles got hot from the mid-range while the Longhorns cooled down a bit from the field.

The Horned Frogs then used a 7-0 run to take their first lead of the second half at 55-54 with 8:57 to play.
After the game was tied at 57-57, the Longhorns put together a 7-0 run of their own, but the Frogs had yet another 7-0 run to tie the game at 64-all.
Then Abmas took over and single-handedly sealed the win.
He converted an and-one, hit a step-back triple and then hit another 3-pointer from the top of the key before nailing a pair of free throws with 42 seconds left to put Texas up 75-64, stunning and silencing the home crowd in the process.
