Texas F Alex Anamekwe Enters Transfer Portal
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Texas Longhorns are in the middle of preparing for tonight's second-round matchup against the Tennessee Volunteers in the NCAA Tournament at Spectrum Center, but they're without a familiar face that's been with the team since before last season.
Per multiple reports, Longhorns forward Alex Anamekwe has entered the transfer portal amid Texas' appearance in March Madness. As confirmation of his departure, Anamkwe's name is not listed on the official Texas roster provided by the NCAA at Spectrum Center in Charlotte ahead of tonight's game.
Anamekwe committed to Texas as a three-star out of McKinney in the 2022 class alongside Dillon Mitchell and Arterio Morris. However, he played sparingly as a freshman on an Elite Eight team that was deep with experience.
Last season, he played in just 12 games while averaging 1.5 points in 4.9 minutes per game. He scored a career-high five points on two separate occasions as a freshman.
Despite a new-look roster in the first year under coach Rodney Terry this season, Anamekwe ended up getting less playing time than he did in 2022-23 and appeared in just six games while averaging 0.3 points. He scored just two points on the season.
The No. 7 seed Longhorns and No. 2 seed Volunteers tip-off at approximately 8 p.m. ET tonight from Charlotte.
