Texas Longhorns G Tyrese Hunter to Enter Transfer Portal
AUSTIN -- The Texas Longhorns' two-day roster turnover has continued on Monday, as the team has now suffered a pair of losses to the transfer portal in about a 30-minute span.
After reports that Texas forward Dillon Mitchell would be entering the transfer portal, college basketball insider Jon Rothstein reported that Longhorns guard Tyrese Hunter will also be transferring after spending two seasons in Austin.
Hunter began his collegiate career at Iowa State before transferring to Texas for the 2022-23 season. In a backcourt alongside Marcus Carr and Sir'Jabari Rice, Hunter was a vital piece during Texas' run to the Elite Eight a season ago.
Hunter has started all 106 games in his college career, which included 71 starts at Texas. He averaged a career-best 11.1 points this past season to go along with 2.9 points and 4.1 assists. Hunter scored a career-best 30 points and had seven assists in a 94-80 win over Oklahoma on March 9 in the regular-season finale.
His departure isn't too surprising considering that the Longhorns landed commitments from Indiana State transfer guard Julian Larry and teammate Jayson Kent on Sunday along with an out-of-nowhere commitment from Arkansas transfer Tramon Mark.
Along with these three, the Longhorns are also hosting Oregon State transfer guard Jordan Pope for a visit on Tuesday. Add this to the fact that Texas will also be building around incoming five-star freshman Tre Johnson and Chendall Weaver next season, and it became increasingly obvious that Hunter to the portal was becoming inevitable.
