Oklahoma Sooners Offensive Players to Watch vs. Texas Longhorns
The Oklahoma Sooners' offense was ranked No. 13 in the country after the conclusion of the 2022 season. However, even after averaging 474 yards per game last year, the Sooners still finished the year with a losing 6-7 season record for the first time since 1998. However, so far this season, improvement has been underway for the 5-0 Sooners with a No. 9 offensive ranking, according to the NCAA.
Fortunately for Oklahoma, incumbent quarterback Dillon Gabriel made his return at the start of the season and is performing better than ever. The season is not even halfway through yet and Gabriel has recorded 1,593 total yards, 15 touchdowns and only two interceptions.
Compared to the Sooners, Longhorn quarterback Quinn Ewers has totaled 1,358 yards, 10 touchdowns and one interception so far this year
Here are the players to watch on Oklahoma's offense in Week 6 when Texas faces the Sooners on Saturday.
QB Dillon Gabriel
Before becoming a Sooner, Gabriel played three seasons at UFC. During those three years, he started 25 out of his 26 games and completed 60.7 percent of his passes for a total of 8,037 yards and 70 touchdowns with 14 interceptions.
In 2022, after transferring to Oklahoma, Gabriel was named the Big 12 Offensive Newcomer of the Year by the league's coaches. He totaled 3,168 yards with a 62.7 passing completion percentage with 25 touchdowns, even after missing an entire game and a half due to an injury mid-season.
However, within the first five games of this season, Gabriel has recorded 1,593 total yards, 15 touchdowns and only two interceptions.
RB Marcus Major
Senior running back Major has rushed for a total of 199 yards this year off of 51 carries and is the Sooners' leading rusher in terms of yardage. On top of that, Major also has a touchdown under his belt.
WR Andrea Anthony
With Marvin Mims starting his professional career in the NFL, Anthony has stepped up to the plate to be Gabriel's No. 1 target.
So far, Anthony has recorded a team-high 387 yards this season off of 22 receptions and one touchdown.
