Longhorns AD Chris Del Conte Answers Future SEC Scheduling Questions
One of the major questions following the Texas Longhorns' impending move to the SEC in 2024, is what the team's future football scheduling will look like.
After all, before the move became official, Texas already had previously set up home and home series with Alabama (2022 and 2023), Michigan (2024 and 2027) Ohio State (2025 and 2026), Georgia (2028 and 2029), Florida (2030 and 2031) and Arizona State (2032 and 2033).
Luckily for Texas, the Alabama series will be concluded before the move is completed, and the matchups with Michigan, Ohio State and Arizona State are also very unlikely to go anywhere.
But, what about future SEC opponents Georiga and Florida?
According to Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte, the Longhorns are still awaiting word on how SEC schedule will shake out, with an answer likely not coming until the summer.
"We don't know what division we're going to be playing in or how it's going to be located," Del Conte said. "I'll probably know more by the summer exactly what it's going to look like."
Del Conte is also awaiting word on the future of the soon-to-be re-ignited rivalry between the Longhorns and the Texas A&M Aggies, who have not played since 2011.
"That's way too premature," Del Conte said. "But I know that game means so much to so many people."
As for the future of the Red River Rivalry against the also sec-bound Oklahoma Sooners, Del Conte was a little bit more clear, stating that the two schools are in negotiations to keep the game in Dallas past the end of their current contract.
"We're going to keep the game in the Cotton Bowl," Del Conte said.
Not only that, but Del Conte also confirmed that the Horns and Sooners will be pushing for a permanent 2:30 timeslot for the Red River Rivalry, beginning with its first SEC edition.
Now, the Longhorns must await their fate in the SEC, as the league debates how to restructure its divisions and schedule going forward.
Luckily for Longhorns fans, however, it appears as though, one way or another, their biggest future matchups will remain intact.
