Texas Longhorns Set for Historic Red River Rivalry Game vs. Oklahoma

The Texas Longhorns are the No. 3 ranked team heading into their game versus the Oklahoma Sooners.

The Texas Longhorns remain unbeaten following their 40-14 win over the Kansas Jayhawks in their second Big-12 conference game. They will now begin preparations for one of the biggest games of every season as they will travel to Dallas, Texas, and the State Fair to face the Oklahoma Sooners in the annual Red River Rivalry game.

In recent years, the Sooners have been the team to enter the Cotton Bowl as the higher-ranked opponent. In fact, the Sooners have been the higher-ranked team in 11 of the 13 meetings. The last time the Longhorns were ranked higher than the Sooners was back in 2009, when Texas was ranked No. 3.

Oklahoma Sooners head coach Brent Venables, left, and Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian meet after the Red River Showdown college football game between the University of Oklahoma (OU) and Texas at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Saturday, Oct. 8, 2022. Texas won 49-0.

That makes Saturday's game a historic one for the Longhorns as they look to continue their unbeaten run and make it two-straight wins over the Sooners in the Red River Rivalry.

Last season's matchup saw the Longhorns dominate Oklahoma 49-0, as quarterback Quinn Ewers made his return from the shoulder injury that knocked him out of the Alabama game. Ewers completed 21 of his 31 passes for 289 yards and four touchdowns with just one interception.

With the redshirt sophomore currently in the midst of a potential Heisman Trophy campaign, another strong display against a currently undefeated Oklahoma team could further his candidacy for the most prestigious individual award in college football.

The 119th edition of the Red River Rivalry will take place on Saturday as both teams will meet at the Cotton Bowl, hoping to continue their undefeated season.
